Moritz Grossmann - Benu

People who are familiar with ancient Egyptian mythology
know of a wonderful metaphor for creation and renewal.
Bennu, the divine heron, settled into its nest one evening
and was consumed by fire there. It left an egg from which
another Bennu bird hatched the next morning.

Benu, as it is spelled in German, is the name of the first
watch from the new Grossmann Uhren manufacture
where the spirit of Moritz Grossmann is kept alive. In the
Saxon town of Glashütte, this ingenious watchmaker
(1826 to 1885) crafted numerous pocket watches,
various chronometers, and a few precision pendulum
clocks that today are coveted collectors’ items seen at
international auctions. Now, 125 years after the death
of this eminent German master of superior watchmaking,
watches that bear his name are once again available.

Grossmann’s inaugural wristwatch rises to the occasion
like the phoenix from the ashes. The Benu radiates
understated beauty, its gestalt flatters the eye and the
wrist. Moritz Grossmann’s watchmaking ideology lives
on in the 21st century: graceful in design, innovative
and premeditated in its mechanical finesse, and
immaculate in its traditional artisanship.

The Benu is much more than the sum of its parts.
Every single element is crafted with the same precision
and perfection.

As always, details are what manifest the utmost in quality: The movement is accommodated in a three-part case made of 750 rose gold. An elegant, narrow bezel surrounds the sublime face of the watch.

The shape of the crown is both aesthetic and functional. A circumferential recess makes it easy to pull the crown for setting the time, and its angled flutes add leverage for winding. The lugs to which the strap is fastened are endowed with a tapered chamfer that creates a flowing silhouette.

The ends of the carefully hand-stitched brown alligator strap are secured with a butterfly clasp that makes it easy to put on and take off the watch. It is also crafted from 750 rose gold and features a pushbutton catch.

The antireflective-coated sapphire-crystal display back exposes the rich inner life of the watch with its remarkable depth. The curved, milled cutout of the German silver 2/3 plate, a typical Grossmann hallmark, places the spotlight on the large screw balance and its breathing hairspring. The plate itself bears the hand-engraved brand signature ”Moritz Grossmann Glashütte i/SA” accompanied by traditional data concerning the movement. Three screwed gold chatons attract just as much attention as the white sapphire bearing jewels and the brown-violet screws that are naturally annealed over an open fire. Wide striping on the plate and the three-band snailing on the ratchet wheel complement the suave orchestration of a harmonious opus.

The movement serial number on the plate and the case number on the screwed back allow coming generations to trace the history of the watch to its origins.

This compact work of art, composed of 188 individual parts, clearly stands for HERITAGE IN TIME.

The Benu has the reference number 100.1010.

This desirable and collectable worldwide edition comprises only
100 watches.

Distribution starts in 2011.
